Perfect Summer Days at Coughton Court

Enjoy a relaxing day out at one of Warwickshire’s most beautiful family homes, suggests Abi Cole.

During the summer months the grounds at Coughton are fresh with the colour and scent of new life. From late April the borders fill out, the apple blossom opens in the orchard and a carpet of bluebells shimmers on the woodland floor.

Nestled between the ancient St. Peter’s Church and Westminster Pool, the walled garden is the jewel in the crown of the Throckmorton family gardens. At its heart lies the award-winning rose labyrinth which, from late June, bursts with more than 200 different varieties of rose, including a large selection of ramblers and climbers.

Further afield, there’s loads to explore. Take a stroll down to the River Arrow and you’ll find broods of ducklings and goslings; take your time and pause on the bridge and you can play a couple of rounds of Pooh Sticks.

Follow the water over to Timms Grove and you will enter Coughton’s ancient woodland. Once part of the Forest of Arden, the wood is one of the most iconic and beautiful sights here. Dig out your 50 Things booklet and the children can start ticking off some of the activities, such as hunting for bugs or making a trail with sticks. Don’t forget to look for the grandfather clock hidden deep in the woods; it’s the perfect spot for a game of hide and seek.

With games in the activity shed and ice creams on the lawn, there’s every opportunity to kick back and relax.
