Woven Art Jewellery

Jewellery designer Jayne Robb, weaves and crochets strands of silver to create exquisite handmade jewellery.

Why Woven Art Jewellery?

The woven aspect is what distinguishes my work and gives it a Celtic feel. I weave and crochet silver to create unique jewellery for both men and women, often including semi precious or precious stones. All my pieces are designed and individually hand made in my workshop. I have several stock items but also work on commissions - bespoke, unique designs made especially to a client’s specifications, giving them an individual piece to treasure and pass on.

How do you weave and crochet with silver?

I combine traditional silversmithing skills like sawing, hammering and soldering with techniques taken from wool and yarn crafts that I learnt in childhood (mainly from my grandmother who was a tailoress). The weaving process is a bit like plaiting hair although silver is a bit trickier to control and shape! Once I became skilled in weaving, I began to wonder if I could crochet with really fine strands of silver (just 0.3mm in diameter) so I tried it and love the delicate yet robust jewellery that results.

How does a commission work?

I have a small showroom adjoining my Evesham-based workshop where I can offer one on one consultations and jewellery viewings. Alternatively, customers can email or phone me with requests. Bespoke items make unique, personal gifts to mark a birthday, wedding or special anniversary. After careful consultation, I finalise the design, cost it and, once the client is happy, start making it. The process normally takes about four weeks. During that time the jewellery is sent off for testing and hallmarking by the Assay Office which certifies the quality and authenticity of the materials used.
